The two basic compression principles are displacement compression and dynamic compression.
The basic difference between a 1-stage and 2-stage air compressor is the number of times the air gets compressed. Air is compressed once in a 1-stage compressor, while it is compressed twice (for doubling the pressure) in a 2-stage compressor.
When you use a power tool, the tank's pressure drops as the compressed air travels through the hose to your tool. The compressor will restart and fill the tank when the pressure in the tank falls too low.
