Product Details

Humboldt H-4195 pocket penetrometer is a lightweight instrument used by field personnel to check the visual classification of soils. It can be used to verify whether excavation side walls require shoring, based on OSHA cohesive soil classifications. It denotes consistency, shear strength and unconfined shear strength.

Height (cm) 2.54
Length (cm) 25.4
Width (cm) 8.38
Weight (kg) 0.108

Working Mechanism

  • Press the red ring against the penetrometer's handle (knurled portion).
  • Grip the handle and push the penetrometer's tip into the soil until the groove marked on the tip is level with the soil.
  • Take the reading on the scale, which denotes the unconfined compressive strength.
  • The measurement should be taken from the lower side of the red ring, closest to the knurled handle.

Features

  • Humboldt H-4195 penetrometer's direct-reading scale is calibrated in tons/sq.ft or kg/sq.cm, which corresponds to the equivalent unconfined compressive strength.
  • It has an indicator sleeve that retains reading after the piston is released.
  • The unit's maximum reading is 4.5 tons per sq.ft or 4.5 kilograms per sq.cm.

Compatible Accessories

Humboldt H-4195F Penetrometer Adapter Feet: They are designed for testing extremely low strength cohesive soils and increase the effective area being measured by 16 times. You must divide the value obtained (on the low-load side) by 16 to obtain the correct unconfined compressive strength.
